Only time will tell whether its just a rumour or it will be a reality. If the news published is true then Google is going to give Microsoft a scare. The news is
Google is preparing its own distribution of Linux for the desktop, in a possible bid to take on Microsoft in its core business – desktop software. A version of the increasingly popular Ubuntu desktop Linux distribution, based on Debian and the Gnome desktop, it is known internally as ‘Goobuntu’. Google has confirmed it is working on a desktop linux project called Goobuntu, but declined to supply further details, including what the project is for
There is a screenshot of the OS too but it looks more like a neat work using photoshop or some graphic tool. But its a fact that google is in a hurry..hiring OS experts and hard core computer scientists whose background isnt search or people who have nothing to do with search or any of its core business. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/01/31/google_goes_desktop_linux/
Well last time i posted about Riya.com rumour and this rumour published all over the place got the company a major funding. So i dont know if google OS is true at all !!!!

well this rumour of Google OS is more than a year old . the term google OS was used for the firsttime by Kotkee than . rajesh jain of emergic wrote about it . but i think in this drama of google Vs Microsoft is not about these two companies only . its about two development and business model . its about Web hosted application Vs installed application . its about ondeman Vs OnPremise . its about SAP Vs SalesForce.com . its about MS Project VS 37signals.com
google and microsoft are just poster boys of this things . i wrote about it in my blog (http://knowprashant.blogspot.com/2005/10/google-vs-microsoft-war-of-paradigm.html)
the funny thing about this is every rumour about next move of google is surfaces when its time to declare there quaterly result . so it pushes the stock price . thus closing the loops . i love the company . i am a big fan of it but after its ipo it had done some ungoolis things . like accepting chinees condition . earlier there was an incedent when if you do the search for “jew” on goolge it used to show an anti jew site on top
when jews community made a noise Sergy said ” Hell of High water ” we will not change our algorithm and ranking . but he is comfortable doing it . talk of not doing evile . as a die hard google fan it was disturbing for me .
but i guess sergy has shareholders to answer and china is a big market
that pretty much expalin it .
Well Abhishek, people do change words at the drop of a pin. So watch out and have patience for a year or so, you will see things which you wont believe. Google will do whatever it denies initially, when Gmail was rumored they played it down saying its not their core business etc etc. The same guys got a domain name registered and Gmail is official now, $100 laptop isnt a joke it has been made to work at MIT and google had talks with the prof. Even the wifi plans of google was atfirst said to be rumours but it was real later. Only Riya didnt fit well, but Riya did get the funding needed and it wont be long Google buys them out!!! So watch out and have patience.
For kind information of all of you. Google’s CEO officially annouced that the rumours about google PC are indeed rumours. The PC segment is not very attractive and they would go for an online OS if they ever want to.

I want to see Microsoft choke and get down its prices. Say $10 or so for the bugged windows version. Google will kick the price war soon. Google signed up with openoffice of java, so it will try to upset office suite. MSN search is no where near, Google is in talks with the MIT prof to get $100 or $150 laptops for spreading its wings in “third world” countries. So the nail in the coffin will be an OS!!!!
Hmm, cool — wonder what all would they want to do with that — what else do you want to do with a desktop anyway, except search 😉
NB: Madhu — when you are posting a link, pls hyperlink it to the reference — I have done it on the above post to faciliate “web” style clicking.
