Here is a list of top web apps in India from Read/write web.
Not very impressive compilation. Reproducing my comment on the post:
Somewhat surprising to see the real web apps of India missing. Look at top sites in India on Alexa.
India is still a very email, search, portal, jobs, matrimony country. Online financial services is another area which this article has missed… Digg clones, movie rentals, real estate, photo sharing might be “interesting” but hardly qualify to be in the list for “top web apps in india”
bollywood is another popular category (per alexa) that got missed here — indiafm, smashits, etc.
railway booking, irctc.com — 5 million transactions a year…

Hi Krish
We have gone ahead and done just what you suggested. One sector that is crying out for solutions is the regional language Web. Yet no one thought it worth their time to come up with a simple solution to the problem of local language input. Enter my startup, with http://www.pdstext.com, an online word processor for Tamil (other Indian languages soon, I promise). [Currently works only in IE]
Besides, you can also search Google, Yahoo! and MSN in Tamil from within our site (no software or font download needed). Now why the hell have these giants so far not done something so elementary? I’m unable to figure it out. Can someone enlighten me?
Since this topic veered off into similar applications, familiar terrain, thinking big etc. I thought that I will take this opportunity and present our company and get your opinion on whether it is main stream, familiar terrain or the bold new one !
We want to bring “Peace of Mind” to infrastructure managers and improve the Productivity and Qualilty of Life of human beings. Most of the IT and telecom equipments are managed using some kind of management solutions. The equipments supplying power and environment like UPS, Batteries, air conditioners, generators, pumps etc. are largely unmanaged. If any of these fail, IT and telecom services also fail.
We network enable these kind of equipments for FREE and monitor (and control them if required) them 24×7 on a subscription basis from our server farm. We use Internet as well as public wireless networks without human intervention to achieve this.
Alerts of various kinds over SMS and email are generated to enable “Fix Before Fail” features by equipment manufacturers and service providers.
I would like to hear your views on whether this is main stream, run of the mill, big, small ?
cheers
Just as anywhere else in the world, there’s no dearth of opining on the problem of copycat, flipmeat Web 2.0 companies in India. It still is where deals get done, may be because VCs are more comfortable to tread in familiar terrain.
How about looking at crappy, unloved sectors simply crying out for innovation, where a single disruptive concept, technology or company could suddenly change the rules ? Aren’t there some out here…? I am sure there are.
Thinking big, managing risks, goal pursuit etc. hear it again and sure many will puke. They’ve been abused so much by so many that “Cliche” would mean an understatement. Yes, one has to have it all as they go forward but not as a reason for starting out. While you start, just keep it simple.
As a tangent, Youtube was founded when Chad and Steve just wanted to share their amateur video and they couldn’t find something they could reliably use. They just got working on something and bingo…!

I agree with Alok, think Big, manage risks, stay unscathed with big names, money and brands and consistently working towards a clear goal is what can make companies, and people big. I have met a lot of the web2.0 internet entreprenuers and I have found this about them, solve problems and they will drive traffic. We are not a very big example of that, but fairly with zero advertising and focusing on product and market we are selling about 200 airtickets a day, which is more than some of the travel companies founded for the last 15./20 years.
