i was going through some recent VC posts about upcoming boom in e-learning websites ( in India ). I tried to look around, but couldn’t find any indian/global website with significant innovation in that area. Can someone point me to a good resource/website ?
I somehow believe, hosting videos and lecture notes coupled with some worksheets is not key to solving this problem.
And at the same time, i have a gut feel that a good learning portal (not restricted to just education) can attract really huge volumes/hits. A patent search on e-learning would help you understand what i am trying to point at.

e-Learning is yet to pick up steam in India despite corporates like NIIT, or WebEx trying these out in different forms. As is clearly understood just lecture notes and certifications will not to be able to provide enough traction. The keys to a successful product or service delivery may lie in:
(i) Good tutors imparting knowledge and mentoring on a virtual platform
(ii) Terrific bandwidth to enable people to remotely login and undertake classes (the technology on WebEx/Centra, and course materials/tests are there: not well integrated yet of course)
(iii) Cash flow to sustain Operating Expenses: via well marketed teaching material and trainers who have the command in their fields
Do feel free to write back to me on: Chiradeep_B@yahoo.com for further details.
Hey!!
I, too believe the internet space has still no interesting offerings in the field of learning.
As Uma and Bala suggested, there is a untapped potential in peer learning. However, with a model like secondlife and electrocity, I fear these are future(May be just about a couple years ahead) versions of what Orkut is today!
What we need for e-learning is a focussed space – there might be communities about sharing information and discussion on orkut today – but these have limited visibility – which is what can also happen in a place like Second life, when it reaches user levels like orkut.
Keen to take this forward with one and all who think about potential in an e-learning space.

Sudhir
Its a pity, that the global conscience called internet has to much teach ..yet very few projects have been able to model it into learning. Also the current delivery model in e-learning is very unfriendly and suited for anything but learning.
My BTP (Bachelors Term Project) was with Fraunhofer, IPSI where they were developing an e-learning highway for all of EU universities … looks like the project never completed. But, now if i think of it … the main was pretty good.
Also, learning has not gone beyond academics, which is a pity.
Also, i liked the idea of learning with peers. Something like holding guitar jams with friends online, while learning.
