Recently I looking for some good and cheap payment gateway vendors, for my small e-commerce application. The target client base is all Indian and currency would be all INR. I ran into issues like – If I get services of vendors based out of US, then I save on cost involved, but then I have to deal with only credit cards. And If I want to support internet banking and debit card usage then I have to use the vendor services available in India, which is quite costly.
From here I started thinking of building my own payment gateway and I was stuck up soon with so many hurdles in my way. I don’t know how to develop a payment gateway, the technologies involved, the kind of logistics required, how to get the banks on board for online banking and all. I’m hoping to get some directions from all the experienced people here on VentureWoods.
Thanks,
Suhas

Is there any maximum limit at PAYPAL on the amount that you can withdraw to your Indian bank account? Or the amount you can withdraw through cheque?

Suhas,
Building a payment gateway may not be as challenging as getting it to link with various banks for using their net banking interface.
It would have been much easier if RBI/IDRBT had dictated a standard interface.
Typical working of payment gateway (using credit cards) is explained in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Credit_card.
Having spent most part of my career in the payment space (beginning with CyberCash) I may be able to answer any other queries that you may have.
Also, checkout India’s mchek they have a huge potential. I was/am expecting many more new payment modes from them.

People,
Thats the whole trick here.
People who ocassionaly do online shopping don’t keep the credit card, most of the times. And I’m planning to target such customers. Now if I go to paypal, paypal is not going to offer me a gateway which accepts the online payment using a debit card or a simple e-banking interface. So I have to come back to someoen like CCAvenue or Tansecute. These people charge like anything. My reason behind scrapping Transecute was 7% commission behind every transaction.
So I just started digging deep into what exactly goes into building a payment gateway.
Anyone who is expert here, can help me with back-end logstics involved in a payment gateway, like how does a payment gateway liks itself with a bank?
Thanks,
Suhas
Dear Suhas and others,
I was associated with ControlCase, IT compliance solutions company. This company is authorized to certify whether these payment gateways keep up their security controls as per the best practices (PCI compliance). Ofcourse in the process, these guys get to know the internal processes and technical deficiencies if any.
Truth is that some of these companies do follow best practices while few are not. That could be because of cost implications.
Anyway, if you want more detailed information in this regard, get in touch with me through a mail to my gmail id : malapati.
Thanks,
Raja
