Hi Folks…
Having worked in Delhi and also in Bangalore; I’ve seen many differences between the work cultures in these two great metros; and each city/region has it’s own advantages and disadvantages.
Am curious… and I seek comments… what’re the experiences that you (venture-woods audience) have had, working in different cities.
Good, bad, ugly… feel free write comments and share your perspectives…

Have drafted a post and am sanitizing it– will post soon.
also, interesting seeing both Jaspreet and Saurabh comment about ‘makes good employees’
@ Deepak:
Thx Deepak for the Pani-puri index; would love to hear more of your pani-puri gyan… please do feel free and welcome to share…
@ Saurabh:
and thx a ton Saurabh abt the detailed and frank comments– will comment/expand with my own views on what you wrote.
@ Bipin:
Detailed reply to you soon. I once met a head-hunter that had been asked to head-hunt programmers from a certain part of india- bring them to mumbai– because the founder felt those folks were more driven and better at persisting for days and weeks with minimal supervision at R & D oriented tasks though they lacked in communication/patience skills sometimes
@Jaspreet:
interesting observations Jaspreet.
I’ll take it as a compliment to beautiful delhi!!!
But yeah; having lived in Ganganahalli in North Bangalore- which is somewhat away from Indira-ngr/Koramangala; I do remember having a lot of Kirana shops in my part of bangalore… and yeah people very warm and friendly and simple–
except when occassionally kannada pride would raise it’s head…
Am going to write more soon– about how I believe the cultural mores/approach to change/innovation/hard-work/taking ownership of projects differs… but first I’d like to hear more…
more opinions open and welcome…
every1 who’s worked anywhere… feel free to comment…
Hmm,
I judge the local entrepreneurship by Kirana shops. I have tried to sell all these locatinns and my observations –
1. Delhi – You would see a kirana shop flooded with more stuff than needed, at the same time he will try and sell you one way or the other. (people and enterprising, and open to new companies, products , people etc. But try and act smart all the time. )
2. Pune – Kirana shops are empty and closed for lunch. (People are very ethical in their dealings. Poor entrepreneurs.)
3. Mumbai – Kirana shops are small, jam-packed and open for business 25×7. (Ready for business, but not available. Slow city, people spend 1/3 their time traveling and think hey been busy.)
4. Chennai – Kirana shops only stocks local stuff, pictures of god and superstars and owners speak one language and not interested in too many people. (conservative. make good employees.)
5. Bangalore – There are no kirana shops, just malls which stock everything, but open till 8 PM. ( Mixed crowed, techies with confused identity. )
When i stop and think, i can’t relate my self to any particular place (father was in defense) … i like being in pune.
jaspreet 🙂
What purpose does this post serve? Location does influence work culture but people who work/start in a location have far more important reasons ( money/family/proximity to customers etc) to consider than work culture.
Hi Nalin,
I have worked in Chennai, Bangalore, Gurgaon and Delhi. Here is what I have observed. I am talking about Chennai and Delhi right now.
These would be biased perspectives and hence cant really vouch for correctness of these.
Chennai: People are very hard working but they need their time. They would start working at 9 and end at 7. You cant expect them to do overtime but they will make sure the work is done in the day.
They are not very enterprising. They make very good employees. Not managers. They have very high physical needs – food on time, proper sleep etc.
Delhi: People try to work smart rather than work hard. They would use shortcuts and rather than putting effort, will outsource (or delegate work). They continuously look for opportunities that they might exploit. Might not be very loyal to their employers.
Id you need more gyaan on pani-puri, autowallahs, policies, govt, companies etc. I would love to share. Just let me know if I am on the right track.
Regards,
SG
P.S.: I am from Delhi.
Since you’ve worked in two places Nalin, why don’t you get the ball rolling? What are you looking to compare? People, politics, roads, workplace issues, auto-driver-audacity, or availability of good pani puri?
(note: Delhi/NCR and Mumbai win the last one)
Having said that, I’ve seen a lot of hate comments bashing authors who express their opinion. Not acceptable. I hope this thread doesn’t devolve thataway. I may not like what you say but will defend your right to say it types.
